A county park in Farmingville Hills has been renamed after a long-time local Republican, Thomas Muratore. Muratore served as a county legislator for the 4th district, which included parts of Ronkonkoma and south-central Brookhaven. In addition to Muratore, the park has also been named for late Suffolk County judge Marquette Floyd. Thomas Muratore served in the Suffolk County Legislature from 2010 to 2020
Tom Muratore was elected to the county legislature in 2009, serving a district that encompassed central Brookhaven. He was a dedicated public servant who fought illegal dumping, regulated drone use and helped constituents navigate bureaucracy. Among his accomplishments: sponsoring legislation to provide free parking for veterans in county buildings and facilities, securing funding for road improvements, and increasing awareness about bus safety. Though his term was short, he left behind a plethora of tangible achievements.
A member of the community for more than 35 years, Muratore served the Suffolk County Legislature as a law enforcement officer and a vice president of the police benevolent association for 18 years. He served the county as a patrol officer and taught at the police academy, among other positions. He graduated from Central Islip High School in 1963 and resided in Ronkonkoma with his wife, Linda.
The Town of Farmingville, NY, has a new park that will preserve a historic landmark for the town. The new Thomas Muratore Park at Farmingville Hills was originally a county park, but Suffolk County bought it in 1992 and opened it to the public in May 2010. The Thomas Muratore County Park in Farmingville, NY is the name for a proposed new park. It is planned to cover 107 acres and will honor the memory of Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. This park will feature a variety of recreational amenities, including a public beach, a skatepark, and a children’s area. Residents will soon have easy access to the park by bike or car.
